Where I'm From
by Jason
inspired by George Ella Lyon
I am from bushes.
From rosemary and oregano.
I am from the leaves of a palm tree.
(Shiny, green, it smelled like soap.)
I am from the plum tree that grew in my garden
the red roses
whose soft, silky petals I remember
as if they were alive.
I am from bulgogi and fried chicken.
From the sprained ankle I received from martial arts
the feet of my friends that helped me.
I am from these moments
always cared for and happy
entwined into the family tree.
